Body Image and Eating Disorders

Body image is the mental picture we form of ourselves, which may not reflect how others see us. Skewed body image affects people worldwide, regardless of ethnicity, culture, gender, or age. According to ANAD, around 30 million Americans suffer from eating disorders, which have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness—someone dies from an eating disorder every 62 minutes.

Types of Eating Disorders:

  • Anorexia Nervosa: Restricting food intake below healthy levels.
  • Bulimia Nervosa: Binge eating followed by purging.
  • Binge Eating Disorder (BED): Consuming large amounts of food in short periods.
  • Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID): Severe food avoidance leading to malnutrition.
  • Diabulimia: Underusing insulin to control weight in people with Type 1 diabetes.

Treatment Methods: A comprehensive care team—including mental health professionals, psychiatrists,  nutritionists, and physicians—is essential. In severe cases, inpatient or residential care may be necessary, along with family therapy and support groups.

The counselors at My Healing Center work collaboratively with the patient, family, and other professionals to provide the support needed to overcome these struggles.
